Web hosting isn’t like it used to be. I was very very broke when I got into this business over 10 years ago. I paid monthly for my web hosting and dreaded the beginning of the month when I had to send in the next payment. I always had to rethink whether I should even be in this business, because I often didn’t earn enough, or couldn’t scrape together enough to pay my hosting fees.

It’s not hosting cost a ridiculous amount of money. They cost me just shy of $15 per month. But I still had troubles paying it. Since I was late, my site would be down until I was able to finally pay the bill.

Even worse than that, expanding my business was a joke. If I wanted to branch off into new web sites I wouldn’t be able to afford a separate hosting package naturally I had to put my sites into subfolders and redirect the domains. Most of the hosting companies that I dealt with frowned upon such activity and my accounts were often shut down. I was running out of hosting companies, so I thought, but mind you I was only dealing with local companies. It never even occurred to me to venture outside the country (or even city) to lay down new virtual land. Sounds strange now that I type this.

Plus I had to submit trouble tickets anything I wanted to do anything to my sites. You know, adding support for dynamic programming languages, changing or adding to the root document, changing permissions, all took days to accomplish.

Thankfully, these days, things are much more advanced. People are buying hosting packages from companies on the other side of the world. People are paying years in advance. People are even hosting multiple (virtually unlimited) web sites under one account, and get this, they are allowed!

I deal with multiple companies now for my hosting needs. One such company, offering unlimited hosting, for less than I was paying for one-site hosting back in the day, is GoDaddy. I also have the ability to administrate a lot of common tasks and most are done automatically for me. Granted, some of the admin stuff was a bit tricky to grasp at first, but it is become very simple with practice. One of the most common of the tasks on GoDaddy is to add extra web sites to your unlimited hosting package.
