When we welcome someone aboard as part of SEO company, we have a form for all their contact details. This is very important especially for Filipino staff. When they have brown outs, it’s good to have some other contact point. Have a team leader, so if they can’t connect with you, which is one cons of outsourcing, they can at least check in with their team leader, just to let you know what’s going on.
They’ll also get a job description with much details, you need to know the job description before you run the ad, but then they also need to be given a job description so that you can set that expectation.
Paying what’s fair, is important. On my job description I talk about the rate. I’m happy to overpay. People talk about paying Filipino staff $2 and $3 an hour. I’ll pay mine $5. If you think this scenario is another cons of outsourcing, it is not. For them, they can live very comfortably on $5 and then I’ll scale it up depending on if I’m looking for a project manager it might be $7 or $8. Even still with geo arbitrage, you’re well and truly in front.
They are allowed to take breaks from their regular SEO services tasks. They get two paid breaks which comprise of ten minutes each. Should they want to take a thirty-minute break or other breaks longer than that, they can do so. However, I make it a fact in the documentation that it is no longer paid. Employees appreciate little things like that. There is not much difference whether they will work here in Australia or in the Philippines.
At the time a new outsourcing employee is welcomed to the team, I make sure that I hire slow and fire quick. In the beginning, I disclose to them that they are in probationary period of three months. It is also advisable to reveal the purpose of this period. Depending on your explanation, you can make them understand that it is a good set-up for both of you. If things are not working out fine for you with in this period of time, then, you will have to let me know. It is pure business and nothing personal. Those who feel unfit for the job can leave after the probationary period.
But the reason you mention that upfront and early, it just sets that expectation. It’s so much easier to get everything out in the open and that’s why my induction process is quite in depth.
While some consider pricing and the probation as one cons of outsourcing, I’ve had a lot of success with it. I use them to entice people to work harder through their probationary period and SEO training and give them a guaranteed pay rise in three months’ time. It’s something we’ve worked at where someone might come to you and say, I want to work for $8 an hour and you think that role is worth $7.
